WTF: Vancouver Considering Changing It's Name!?

Just playing, it is our lowly cousin to the south Vancouver, Washington that is considering changing its name to Fort Vancouver in order to distinguish itself from us. Apparently many Americans and Canadians get confused when they arrive in Vancouver, Washington. This will be their third attempt at a name change.

I don't see why there should be any confusion, one is in the States and the other in Canada. Perhaps, people are more geographically challenged then I thought. Do Americans also confuse London, Ontario with London, England? How about Paris, Ontario or Fucking, Austria (real town click the Wikipedia link)?
In the end they should just be happy with the fact that come February 2010 a handful of Americans are going to show up at their doorstep looking for the winter Olympics. After they milk that opportunity then by all means change your name, it just makes more sense to capitalize on the name first, no?

Okay I didn't even know there was another Vancouver. I googled it and there are many cities with the same name all over the place. Hello Springfield anyone ha!

Yes, most people are challenged. Have you every gone to Disneyland but flown into Ontario?

You're not going to confuse Paris with Paris, Ontario. They're too far apart and the one in France is way too big and has hell of a lot more culture associate with it. Its when you have two cities in the same region (Cascadia) that have similar identities that you have the problem.

True Technobee, but I agree with your point about it being in the same region and that is the catalyst for the name change.

The whole London and Paris thing was tongue in cheek lol. Although I do want to visit Fucking, Austria now lol

VCBuzz, as an American (though not a geographically challenged one), I can assure you that they DO confuse Vancouver, WA with Vancouver BC and London ON with London, England. Not tongue in cheek there.

    Here is a true story..

In high school I had a world civ class and part of my project for that class was to find out what people knew about other countries. So, considering it was an "alternate" school and most students were actually inmates from the local jail, I asked a simple question of 30 people. Can you name 4 countries other than the USA?

    ............

Two out of 30 people could do it. And ALL of them forgot Canada existed. They had no idea what was north of the US. No lie. Sad, huh?

(For the record, I am an exception to the low standard of American education! lol)

Wow that is sad to see FOX. I can understand the confusion between the two Vancouver as technobee mentioned above, but London, Ontario for London, England. That is a crying shame, as London, England is one of the worlds capitals!

I think it is a valid issue... it's not that people are trying to go to one and end up at another, but if you're having a conversationa and want to refer to Vancouver, and you mean Van WA, you have to specify - which is a pain. Imagine living in a town where everytime you said your hometown name to anyone outside the town you had to append the state because people would assume you meant the other one because it is bigger/better known and so close by.

My sister lives in London. If I don't specify which one, it's about a 50/50 split which one people assume I mean.

To Fox: Well I hope there are more expections then you. But wouldn't it be better to raise the education level than to change the names of the towns?

But I also have to agree with burrito, if I was an inhabitant of Vancouver, WA and I had to explain that it's something different than Vancouver, BC all the time, I'd rather be distinguished somehow.
