While the Suburban Don continues to get disrobed by the Vancity Maverick in our first political stand-off at Vancity Buzz, I the Urban Dweller have chosen to keep silent and let those 2 "cretins" go at it. I will Shift my focus for the time being on the Olympics. With the Summer Olympics starting off with a bang in Beijing, I thought it was appropriate to shed some light on the Olympic village being constructed here for 2010.
The site, South East False Creek (SEFC) was historically used for industrial and commercial purposes. However for many years that land was sitting idle with decrepit buildings abound on prime waterfront land. The Olympic village is the first component of a larger plan for that are known as SEFC, ultimately housing up to 16,000 people. The village features low and mid-rise accommodations for 2,800 athletes and officials. The location is excellent as athletes will be able to walk bus or take a ferry to Downtown Vancouver and its abundance of restaurants, shopping and night life. Post Olympics the athletes village will become residential housing primarily for families. During the Olympics officials have requested to ban "jacks" from entering the city of Vancouver. The Urban Dweller agrees; confine them to their circle jerks at Bear Creek park.
The Project Consists of lower and mid-rise buildings, as the city has opted for a European style density for this project. Developed by Millennium Waterfront and will feature the Arthur Erickson designed towers with a slight tilt. Transportation in the area will include the new Olympic village station of the Canada Line, the existing Main and Terminal Station and a street car network from Quebec Street to Columbia Street. An addition to the sea wall is now complete and open to the public. It features some neat street furniture, which will be the subject of another post for another day. The Urban Dweller will keep you posted on any new developments and will post photos of the construction status periodically.

Ah yes! Another project that will solve all our problems! Too bad they cut the social housing component in half, making it yet another playground for the rich. But then we all know thats what you prefer.
I guess be successful financially is a crime and burden on society these days. This is prime real estate on the waterfront. Why wouldn't it be a playground for the "rich"?

After working on the Olympic Village site for 3 months
I am embarrassed at the quality of workmanship and the fact that unskilled labour is being used to build this venue with at least one mechanical contractor. I am professional in the mechanical trades and to have been replaced by 12.00 hr labour is appalling so let the rich have the first crack at this housing mess.
