Vancouver Buildings: Salt Building

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Wednesday, November 11, 2009 | , , , | 0 comments »

The Salt Building was originally built sometime around 1930 to refine raw salt. Later on it was converted in to  a paper recycling plant, recently the building had sat empty. The building is owned by the City of Vancouver and following the Olympics it will be the social focal point of the new Olympic Village (SEFC) neighbourhood. It is now pretty much fully restored and eventually will be home to a brew pub, bakery, coffee shop (this is Vancouver after all) and a restaurant.  To see more photos of the Salt Building continue below.

A.C.E. Benefit Concert @ Caprice Night Club November 15, 2009

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Tuesday, November 10, 2009 | , | 0 comments »

A good friend of ours at The Buzz is putting together a benefit concert this weekend. She asked if we could help spread the word and of course we'd be more than happy to do so. So here is some info on the charity component.

A.C.E BENEFIT

The Kinamba project was established originally by local people in response to a local need for the poorest children to go to school.

They now have a feeding program that feeds the under privileged students who can not get enough at home. All students get one meal a day, however due to a lack money only some get another. Since they all can't be fed multiple meals a day, those who need it most get more. The program is set up to eventually be run by the community.
We would like to use our talent and sources to help them out and raise up as much money as we can for them. We hope you feel the same way.

100% of proceeds go towards educating and feeding children in Africa through this project.
check out the website and see what it is all about,

Brush Your Shoulders Off

Eek. I'm more than HAPPY to contribute a little fashion know how to the already informative BuzBoldz and will be offering tips, tricks, trends and of course insight into what your FAVORITE celebs are wearing. Let's get to it you fashionistas...

Less than 2 months and counting till the Holiday season and work parties, BFF bashes and charity galas will be commencing before you can say, "hurry up and pass me the Eggnog."It's always difficult to find the PERFECT dress for that special event. You don't want to look too trendy, too stiff or too flashy AND you most definitely do NOT want to be the focus of everyone's attention for all the WRONG reasons (for example: unsightly nip slip or VPL.)

Therefore I APPOINT the "one shouldered dress" as the prime example of Holiday glam. It's a much classier version of the strapless LBD and in cases where you'd like to cover up and show off some skin at the same time, the one shouldered dress is the perfect fit.

Absolut Vancouver: Limited Edition Vodka Vancouverized

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Tuesday, November 10, 2009 | , , | 5 comments »

Apparently this limited edition bottle will be showing up in BC liquor stores shelves today or very shortly. Furthermore, this is all supposed to be part of the greater good for the Vancouver arts community, at least that is what the fine people at Absolut Vodka are saying. Nonetheless, since Gordo and his crew continue to slash arts funding this surely has to be welcomed news by the BC arts community

The Bay Downtown Looks a lot Better These Days

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Tuesday, November 10, 2009 | , , , | 3 comments »

I know the City of Vancouver is a bunch of advertising Nazi's, besides who needs the extra revenue when the city's coffers are flush with cash, oh wait they aren't... However, I digress, walking past the downtown Bay on Georgia Street the other day made me think how awesome the building looks adorned with the Olympic wrap. The only thing that needs work now is that hideous awning and they are working on restoring it.

Vancouver, Unappreciated By Locals

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Monday, November 09, 2009 | , , | 19 comments »

Recently Forbes ran an article on the top cities in the world for which to live in. The ratings were taken from the recent quality of life survey done by Mercer. Clearly any such list is a subjective one and lends itself to heavy opinions and criticism, especially from the residents in cities that did not make the list or received a lower ranking than they'd like.

What wasn't surprising is that Vancouver rated high on that list (tied for 4th) and it was again the top North American city on that list. Of course that brought out the usual whiners in our city who probably haven't visited many other cities for an extended period of time to appreciate what we got going on here. Maybe I've drank way too much juice from the Happy Planet factory, but I love this town for all it is, good and bad. Of course I'd like to change the bad, but let's get realistic here, there will always be an element of  "bad" in any city on this planet. Why would Vancouver be any different?

Vancouver Still A Nuclear Free Zone

Posted by Urban dweller | Monday, November 09, 2009 | , , | 5 comments »

This is probably one of the silliest things I've seen in a long time, well in the last few weeks at least, this is Vancouver after all. It looks as though Vancouver East MP Libby Davies (NDP MP of course) is worried about the nuclear free zone signs (seen in photo above) disappearing. Really, you don't have anything better to do? The whining of the left is getting to be down right trite at this point. Sign or not, I'm pretty sure people around the world know that Vancouver is a nuclear free zone. If a sign is what distinguishes one city or country from say North Korea and Iran then we, the inhabitants of earth got bigger problems.

Furthermore other cities across Metro Vancouver do not have these signs, does that mean Surrey is hoarding nuclear weapons? Come on you kooks in the left need to stick to your priorities, mainly profiting off the backs of the homeless and mentally ill. I kid, I kid, sorta.

Money J Musings: Nov 9, 2009

Wow it's been a busy week for the Buzz crew at Vancouver Fashion Week. Damn, one gets tired checking out all the models.. uhh fashion.

--Speaking of fashion, those Vancouver 2010 Red Mittens are still sold out! Just like the EPIC FAIL with the tickets, Vanoc c'mon you gotta step it up now. It's crunch time.

--Ever since The Beat has been acquired by our evil brothers from the East, CTVglobemedia, the quality of music has since slipped. The purchase was made two years go, but one can notice their influence slowly slipping into the playlists. The switch of going from the American Top 40 to the Canadian Top whatever was the nail in the coffin. The Beat is plagued by a small selection of mainstream music, repeatedly hammered into our heads until we become sick of it. Some of this may be attributed to the stupid CRTC rule of having to play 35% Canadian music, most of it mediocre at best. I've noticed them throwing in some old school Pac and Biggie lately, but it may be too late. I will stick to my trusty CD player.

This past week Little Mountain public housing demolition began. The aging buildings and poor use of available land was the catalyst for the redevelopment of this site, however, I think the developer COV sold the land to Holburn, is probably not the best choice to rebuild this project. You see Holburn still has their hands full with The Ritz Carlton tower and The Hills project in East Vancouver and I just don't trust their management to get the job done. Make no mistake Little Mountain's housing had run its course, what I don't agree with is the fact it will take so long to get the project started. Why tear it down without a concrete plan to rebuild on the site? I'll delve more into this matter some other time.

The Olympics are only a few months away and if you didn't get your tickets yesterday don't fret.

Saturday

Saturday boasted both experienced, and emerging designers. PORSCIA, Anelore Popa, and OrangOrang were just some of the designers that we had the opportunity to enjoy.

Here is a taste of what we saw:

Anelore Popa - Beautiful, glittering evening gowns grazed the runway. Anelore Popa used lots of punchy colour, and played up the contrast to create beautiful gowns. The dresses were unique, and sequined corset looked gorgeous.

PORSCIA - The designer focused on tailored pieces, with natural, earthy tones. The pieces were very creative, and feminine. The line was very figure-flattering and designed for a women that did not want to stand out solely because of the trendy pieces she wore, but rather someone that appreciated modern but classic lines. Unique textures, and creative details kept the line fresh, and the main focus remained on the waist.

Friday November 6th - Eco-Fashion Show

This Friday VFW showcased local talent focused on sustainable and eco-friendly fashion. Designers such as NATE, Lav & Kush, and Hawkes Ave were just some of the lines that entertained the audience. The venue, Colin Campbell was large and beautiful. It had a post-modern, industrial feel, with delicate touches of cast iron flowers.

Models strutted their stuff down the runway, and the audience was captivated. Here’s a peek of what they saw:

Nate Organics – This line was contemporary and featured a modern take on traditional eco-fashion. Models were wearing graphic fabrics, with punchy colours. The norm of greys, greens, and whites were juxtaposed with black, red, fuschia and teal. The end result was fabulous, wearable, sustainable and trendy fashion. One of the models was an Olympic gold medalist, Adam Kreek. He donned both Nate Organics, and the partner designer Play it Cool. They have been working continuously to make sure that they can dress the athletes for the coming games, without releasing any carbon emissions.

Lav and Kush – Beautiful, feminine pieces in soft colours were the focus of this collection. Tiered ruffles and a focus on the waist was a common occurrence. The line was very wearable, and appealed to women both young and old.

Vancouver 2010 Ticket Release EPIC FAIL

This morning like millions of other people in the world I tried my hand at getting the final release of tickets for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. After numerous attempts and multiple browser windows to no avail, I kept getting timed out. Ten minutes in I got the dreaded phase 2 message. Looks like VANOC has servers from the 90's.

WTF: Robson Street Turned Upside Down via The Gap

Posted by Vancity Buzz | Saturday, November 07, 2009 | , , , | 1 comments »

The Gap is launching it's new marketing campaing called "Sprize" and this week they unveiled a unique street front display on Vancouver's Robson Street. The display outside the store is entirely upside down, there is an upside down bike rack with the bikes also upside down. There is also an upside down fire hydrant and my personal favourite an upside down hot dog cart outside the Robson Street store front. Continue reading to see a time lapse video of The Gap being turned upside down.
